I completed my Level IIB FIeldwork placement at Children's of Alabama Outpatient McWane's PT/OT department. At this placement, I was supervised by an Occupational Therapist who specializes in treating Brachial Plexus Injuries (both acquired and birth injuries), serves on the Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy post-surgical therapy team, and treats patients who are transitioning from inpatient rehabilitation services. During this rotation, I was able to assist in treating patients 0-21 years of age with complex medical histories. The most common diagnoses I served at this setting were Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Cerebral Palsy, and Brachial Plexus Injury. This setting allowed me to become confident in teaching functional mobility skills as well as use robotics equipment for improved patient outcomes in therapy sessions.

I completed my Level IIA fieldwork rotation at The Red Barn in Leeds, AL. While at this site, I learned about non-profit operation management, the biomechanics of horseback riding, how therapeutic horsemanship can benefit those experiencing mental health disorders, and how equine-assisted therapy benefits children of all ages and abilities. I completed several data analysis projects investigating how students with higher reported adverse childhood experiences benefit from services provided by The Red Barn. I also helped facilitate a TBI-survivor support group that was held at the barn, supported educational experiences of those visiting the barn, and provided task analysis of students for certified therapeutic riding instructors. I was fortunate to get to experience occupational therapy in an emerging practice area and get to learn from a phenomenal fieldwork educator.
