My background is in academia and scientific research. I studied neuroscience at university because I loved (and still love) understanding how different systems work together as a cohesive whole, and after graduating my first jobs were research assistant roles in various labs.To be a research assistant is to become variously a: test-subject; technician; experiment-designer; diary-manager; data-collector; equipment-calibrator; student-wrangler; diagram-maker and paper-writer.I picked up programming and scripting to start 'automating away the boring tasks' for myself and my lab, and refined these skills in my spare time on personal projects.I shifted into industry and IT by becoming a software tester, starting out automating manual tests and was soon building test frameworks and leading a team of SDETs for various clients.I still do a job where I get to wear many hats: I architect test solutions, implement them, and ensure that the results of testing is communicated in a meaningful way that helps to make quality applications that users can rely on.
