I am on the board of this engineering company of Poona. The Forbes family - Darius, Mahrookh, Farhad, Naushed, Rati - is competent, humane, and great fun to be with. I have learnt an enormous amount about ethical management from working with the Forbes.

I write a fortnightly column. Till the end of 2013, I also wrote editorials.

I chair the management board of this consultancy, which is principally engaged in advising and in solving the problems of foreign companies that want to establish their presence in India, including regulations, accounting, audit, location and recruitment. I have known Ajay Sethi, who set up this company in 1994, for a quarter century, and admire the accounting and consultancy practice he has built up.

To my surprise, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee took me as an advisor. I had seen him perform in Parliament when I was in the finance ministry from 1991 to 1993, and knew what a great orator he was; it was a revelation to find that he was also a good listener.

I helped the finance minister of India, Manmohan Singh, design and implement a radical reform of economic governance, dismantling controls and restrictions that were 50 years old and had outlived their usefulness. India, which used to have a payments crisis roughly once a decade till then, has not had one since 1993; and its economy grew at rates close to 9 per cent between 2007 and 2010, the highest in record.

I organized the Energy Research Group of energy experts for IDRC, managed a research programme involving over 60 energy specialists and 100 papers, and published a series of 15 volumes embodying their work
