As a Chief Executive Officer and President of Sick Cells, I oversee the entire organization, programs, and fundraise. I am driven by our mission and my personal connection to sickle cell disease.

Sick Cells' mission is to elevate the voices of the sickle cell disease (SCD) community and their stories of resilience. In highlighting the grave disparities this community faces, we hope to influence decision-makers and propel change.-Oversees operations, Board functions, and employees -Sources key people to execute tasks such as photographers, graphic designers, or interested stakeholders -Researches topics that affect the sickle cell community to design photo shoots and interview guides for focus groups-Designs and researches policies and legislation that impacts the sickle cell community-Trains volunteers for events -Produces monthly newsletter, sources stories and individuals from the sickle cell community for interviews

-Serves as primary study coordinator for research SCD protocols at affiliated hospitals or in the outpatient clinic setting as assigned by the Director -Participates in initiation visits/investigator’s meetings for assigned clinical trials and implements these trials according to a deadline schedule mutually agreed upon by PI and sponsor -Serves as a liaison between multiple outreach departments, clinicians, and the SCD community -Educates clinic/hospital personnel for participation in protocol conduct, data collection process, SCD, and related conceptual issues as applicable. -Develops strategies to address key issues, like transition, in the SCD patient population.

Key projects Selected Project Experience-Development of Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan Monitoring Methods for CMS: Ms. Valentine works on a team that collaborates with CMS on a broad effort to review, analyze, and develop methods and measures to enhance the current tools that CMS uses to monitor Medicare Advantage (Part C) and Prescription Drug (Part D) programs. Ms. Valentine serves as a project coordinator. Her role is to plan and draft communication packages for CMS, review CMS regulation and guidelines, conduct interviews with subject matter experts (SMEs), lead informational conference calls, analyze qualitative data, and write chapters in multiple analyses reports submitted to CMS. -Strategic Innovation Engine (SIE) for CMS:The SIE is an innovative quality improvement engine. The SIE will identify which healthcare practices show significant evidence of success, expand the science of quality improvement, and disseminate what practices work for specific healthcare settings. Ms. Valentine’s role is to design, disseminate, and analyze bimonthly internal surveys. She conducts research for the literature review subtask. As part of her literature review role, Ms. Valentine proposed to include sickle cell disease as part of a special innovation project released by CMS. The topic – Sickle Cell Disease Pain Management in the ED – was accepted and released as an RFP in March of 2016. -Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI): The purpose of the project is to design and conduct monitoring activities and an evaluation for Model 1 of the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) Initiative for the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI). Ms. Valentine researched quality improvement interventions for hospitals based on their Model 1 measures and drew on local and environmental factors that could contribute to outcomes measures.

Contracted Researcher.-Used Crosstabulation in SPSS to compare distinct variable from a Univision national survey conducted on latinos about education and their knowledge of Common Core State Standards-Wrote a research report for the Gates Foundation and Univision with results and findings from the statistical analysis.

.Researched and designed themes tailored to at risk children in Chicago.Facilitated activities and discussions for siblings and patients of Sickle Cell AnemiaAssisted in a study funded by the Illinois Violence Prevention Association to curb bullying in Chicago Public Schools.

This programme provides an advanced training in social research. It equips us with the skills needed to undertake independent research, using a range of methodologies. Through the dissertation, we are able to develop practical, intellectual and critical skills in our specific areas of interest.The dissertation required a research study to be formulated and executed. I developed a qualitative research study that was based in South East London with a support group for people with Sickle Cell Disease.
