My work at Biocon helped me gain a deep understanding of the functioning of the pharmaceutical industry.I was involved in the management of two biosimilar / generic drug development programs aimed at the US and EU markets. The work required liaising with teams from across the value chain including R&D, regulatory, marketing, medical devices and manufacturing divisions and monitoring their progress based on project milestones. The progress was regularly reported to the COO of Biocon. I was also involved in the development of business cases for potential portfolio products. This work was done in close collaboration with the finance team at Biocon and was presented to the board of directors for decisions regarding portfolio management.

We produce, retail and whole sale high end speciality teas. These teas have been produced by understanding the molecular processes in tea which influence the characteristics like colour, flavour and strength. Key achievements include,_ Developed a line of three hand rolled and sun dried, micro lot specialty teas for the domestic and international markets _ Selected specific strains and optimized the enzyme activity required for each of the desired characteristics of processed tea (strength, color, flavor) _ Built the operation model (contribution margin-68% of sale price) and negotiated retailer margins, shelf space and delivery volume _ Marketed the retail product to the niche-affluent customer segment - packaging, branding and designing were done in house_ Optimized molecular processes for other tea processing units leading to higher quality, thereby increasing revenue by 25%

The position involved in restructuring and managing the day to day activities of a 68 year old tea plantation. Project 1 It is really interesting that an entire organism develops from a single cell. Although, the cells differentiate to specific cell types, they all carry the exact same DNA. This DNA along with associated proteins form chromatin, whose arrangement and compaction states vary among different cell types. My project involved the study of chromatin compaction, collaborating with a Canadian laboratory. A) The first phase of the study analysed the requirement of energy (ATP) to maintain the compaction states of chromatin. We discovered that the compaction state of chromatin can also be altered by varying the concentration of poly-valent cations, showing a direct correlation between charge and compaction, which could also be a secondary effect depletion of ATP. B) Chromatin compaction can be brought out by certain drug treatments. Using one such drug we identified proteins associated with chromatin that change upon this drug treatment. For this study, state of the art mass spectrometers were used by implimenting new innovative techniques like SILAC, which were developed in the lab.Project 2In collaboration with the Dundee Drug Discovery unit, a drug screening assay was developed for the neglected tropical disease, African Trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness).
