About Ashwin Venkatakrishnan
Biomedical Engineer with a passion for research, experimental design, healthcare data analytics and neuroscience.Currently work as a Biomedical Engineer at the Laboratory of Integrative Neuroscience in the Department of Ophthalmology at SUNY Research Foundation. My lab and I study the neuronal and perceptual correlations of fixational eye movements. We design psychophysics experiments to understand how fixational eye movements effect visual perception, attention and cognition. We test oculomotor phenomenon like Joint and Split Attention, various aspects of foveal and peripheral vision, and vision in certain abnormal or diseased states. My responsibilities include design and programming of psychophysics experiments, calibration and tracking of eye movements, tackling software and hardware issues with the eye tracking system; data collection, cleaning, and interpretation; data analysis which includes using Machine Learning techniques to obtain signatures or develop models of eye movements; and data visualization.Worked on a couple of Grant proposals, one being a Future of Work at the Human-Technology Frontier (FW-HTF) and the other being a National Institute of Health (NIH) Research Project Grant (R01). Produced data and figures for a paper presentation at the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) Conference 2018. Working towards the publication of 4 papers in the Neuron, Journal of Neuroscience, PeerJ and The Royal Society Journal respectively.Acquired a Masters Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Columbia University Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. My areas of interest during the course were Bioinstrumentation, BioMEMs and Computational Modeling.

Assisted in developing the lumped model of pulmonary and Systemic circulation for a rat on MATLAB working extensively with data structures, simulating beat to beat hemodynamics and mechanics.Pressures in the chambers and tubes, Volumes of the chambers, flows through valves, Pressure-Volume(PV) loops were obtained.The model enabled dynamic analysis of heart defects like Mitral Valve Regurgitation, Stenosis; and Left Bundle Branch Block.I also assisted in studying the Pressure-Volume (PV) relationships of the ventricles and testing for differences in the areas under the PV loops under varying degrees of Mitral Valve Regurgitation.My work helped in taking a step further in realizing the goal of the research group which is to develop patient specific models of the cardiovascular system thereby moving towards personalized medicine and providing more efficient treatment against cardiovascular diseases. Future considerations include developing the circulation model for the mouse, a human fetus and a human new born. The focus is on developing a model that can transition from the human fetus to the new born depicting structural, physiological and hemodynamic changes during the process.
