As a data science and AI lead, I have provided consultant services to equipment development for various machines. I designed a complete data loop, enabling online dataflow between a control system (PLC) and an external computer, performing big data analysis of 178 billion variables collected from 27 different customer sites to extract operational descriptors and find temporal patterns, learning the machine operations, and developing AI algorithms to make operational predictions to stop the machine in case a deviation occur. The application ranges from online deviation detection (within a 4 ms machine cycle) to short-term active model learning (hours of operation) to long-term operation drift detection (operational profiles of months and years). The agile-based development cycle starts with concept building and goes up to its deployment on the customer side, and then we keep improving it. The developed AI technology for early deviation detection in servo-driven cyclic operations is presented to the company innovation forums and filled for patent registration as lead inventor. It involved optimization and machine learning techniques, sensor networks, simulators, and a prototype implementation. The autonomous inspection missions were carried out in large, real-world environments using novel mission strategies and state-of-the-art robotic navigation and perception capabilities (e.g., using LiDAR, accelerometers, TDLAS, and SLAM approaches). A user interface was designed to compare the autonomous gas sampling capabilities against the strategies of human experts teleoperating with the robot.
