I serve as Provost & Senior Vice-President and a Professor of Linguistics at Chaminade University of Honolulu. As the university's Chief Academic Officer, I lead our deans, faculty and the academic enterprise and serve as the principal deputy to the President. Prior to my role at Chaminade University, I was the Assistant Provost and founding Director of the Center for the Study of Languages & Cultures at the University of Notre Dame as well as Vice-Provost & Chief International Officer at Kennesaw State University in Atlanta. I am a scholar of second language acquisition, language learning technology and international studies and am the former managing editor of IALLT Journal for Language Learning Technology. I am a United Nations Fellow and the founder and chairman of the United Nations Institute for Training & Research regional education and training center in Honolulu (CIFAL Honolulu), and I also served as the former chairman of the UN education and training center in Atlanta. I have served as the Executive Secretary of the International Association for Language Learning Technology; a trustee and board member of the Center for the Advanced Study of International Education; and a founding member of the board for the federally funded Title VI National Foreign Language Resource Center on Language Assessment & Evaluation based at Georgetown University. I am originally from Minnesota, and I did my undergraduate work at the University of Minnesota. I completed my Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics at the University of Arizona and my Master’s Degree in Multilingual & Multicultural Education at Florida State University. I also conducted extensive post-graduate work and research in France, Germany and Morocco. I am professionally fluent in French and continue to study foreign languages for work and personal interest. I currently live in East Honolulu in a bilingual home with my son, Samuel, and wife, Dr. Virginie Askildson.
