I direct programs and consulting at 4 Day Week Global, where I’m helping people and organizations create a million new years of free time.A 4-day week creates about 50 new days of free time— 10 weeks a year. Every five years, you get a year of your life back. At 4 Day Week Global, we’re working with companies, nonprofits, and governments to implement the #4dayweek at scale. Ultimately, we think we can create millions of years that people can spend with family, with friends, practicing hobbies and perfecting crafts, and making the world a better place. My latest book, SHORTER: WORK BETTER, SMARTER AND LESS-- HERE'S HOW documented the global 4-day week movement with it was just getting started, and just becoming aware of itself. It’s a sequel to my 2016 book REST: WHY YOU GET MORE DONE WHEN YOU WORK LESS, which explores the hidden role rest plays in the success of super-creative and -productive people. My books have been translated into more than 20 languages languages. My academic training is in history and sociology of science, a field that blends history, anthropology, and sociology. My research uses ethnography, interviews, historical case studies, and literary analysis (and whatever other tools are lying around) to understand how people and technology co-create worlds. I’ve also worked as a technology futurist and forecaster, and corporate consultant.

Among the 200+ organizations I've worked with: Medibank (Australia), Hackensack Health (New Jersey), Golden Police Department (Colorado), Oxfam (Australia), Hutch Games (UK), Mental Health Advocacy Services (California), Metro Caring (Colorado), Advanced RV (Ohio). -
Founder And AuthorStrategy And Rest Aug 2013 - PresentMenlo Park, CaStrategy and Rest supports my books WORK LESS, DO MORE: DESIGNING THE 4-DAY WEEK (Penguin Business, 2023); SHORTER: WORK BETTER, SMARTER, AND LESS--HERE'S HOW (Public Affairs, 2020), REST: WHY YOU GET MORE DONE WHEN YOU WORK LESS (Basic Books, 2016), and THE DISTRACTION ADDICTION (Little, Brown, 2013), as well as my public speaking and keynotes.I also work as a mentor and editor with a small number of fellow authors. -
Senior ConsultantStrategic Business Insights Sep 2012 - Sep 2019Menlo Park, CaAs a Senior Consultant at SBI, I wrote about emerging technologies, global weak signals disruptions and weak signals, and worked with clients exploring commercial applications of emerging technologies. I designed, organized, facilitated or been an expert participant in about 200 workshops on five continents during my years at SBI and IFTF. I also led tours of groups of executives, journalists, and policymakers from Europe and Asia interested in learning about Silicon Valley. -
Visiting FellowMicrosoft Research Jan 2011 - Apr 2011Cambridge, United KingdomA sabbatical in beautiful and historic Cambridge, England allowed me to think seriously about contemplative computing (see http://www.contemplativecomputing.org for more). Since it was the winter, it was an excellent time to stay indoors (in the lab or in a pub, depending on one's mood) and get stuff done. The research I conducted in Cambridge became the foundation of my book, THE DISTRACTION ADDICTION (Little, Brown & Co.). -
Associate FellowUniversity Of Oxford - Said Business School Mar 2008 - Dec 2010Oxford, United KingdomAs an Associate Fellow at the Saïd Business School at Oxford University, I advised students in the MBA program, participate in SBS research initiatives, and conduct research on futures methods. During my fellowship I wrote half a dozen academic articles, won two prizes for best futures essay, and served on the editorial board of the Journal of Future Studies and the advisory board of the new European Journal of Futures Research. -
Research DirectorInstitute For The Future Jan 2000 - Jul 2009Palo Alto, CaliforniaAt IFTF I forecast the impact of emerging technologies on organizations, work, and business. I helped develop and was lead researcher on a multiyear project, sponsored by the UK and US governments, on the future of science. I consulted with a number of Fortune 100 companies, organized and facilitated dozens of workshops on five continents, and led IFTF's forays in social media. IFTF is where I learned the craft of futures work (even well enough to become critical of some of its core assumptions and norms). -
Visiting ScholarStanford University Feb 1999 - Aug 2001I first came to Stanford in 1991 as an NSF postdoc, and returned in 1999 as a hybrid digital archivist / STS lecturer. My appointment ended in 2001; since then I've been a visiting scholar, which is a fancy way of saying I have a library card and do some occasional guest lecturing or student advising.Having an academic affiliation gives me access to obscure books and scientific journals that otherwise would be hard to find, and to people with a lot of useful expert knowledge (even if they don't necessarily know the value of that knowledge). -
Managing EditorEncyclopaedia Britannica Apr 1996 - Feb 1999Greater Chicago AreaI managed the Encyclopaedia Britannica's editorial division during its transition from print to electronic publishing. I directly managed a staff of 20+ editors, and spent a lot of time "interfacing" (i.e., hanging out with, cajoling, arguing with, etc.) a brilliant art director, production people, marketers, and green-eyeshade finance types. I managed content development for award-winning Britannica CD, Britannica Online, and print encyclopedia. While I was there I also authored three articles on new media and encyclopedia publishing.Britannica was where I first discovered that the corporate world is, in its own way, a lot more diverse than academia, and that the everyday and long-term challenges companies face can be as intellectually engaging as anything you'll find in the archive or laboratory-- if you're open to those challenges. -
