As a founding member of Valley Mill Foods, I played a critical role in strategic financial planning, budgeting, and cash flow management. This position required hands-on involvement in all aspects of financial management, from day-to-day accounting to high-level decision-making, with a focus on creating sustainable business operations.My responsibilities included:- Oversee and manage the company's financial operations, including accounting, payroll, and tax compliance.- Develop and implement financial strategies to support business growth and ensure operational efficiency.- Prepare and monitor budgets, financial forecasts, and cash flow analysis.- Conduct regular financial reporting and present key insights to the owners to guide decision-making.- Manage relationships with external accountants, auditors, and financial institutions.- Ensure compliance with all relevant tax laws and regulations, including corporate filings and payroll taxes.- Provide financial analysis and recommendations for new business opportunities, menu pricing, and cost controls.- Oversee inventory management and cost analysis for both restaurant and food production operations.- Lead financial planning efforts for both the start-up and operational phases.

As a Tax Specialist, I am responsible for providing comprehensive tax preparation and accounting services for both individual and corporate clients. I manage a diverse portfolio of clients across various industries, handling everything from bookkeeping to tax planning and business consulting. My role requires a strong understanding of tax regulations, excellent client communication, and the ability to navigate complex financial situations with efficiency and precision.Key Responsibilities:- Prepare and file T1 and T2 tax returns for personal and corporate clients across multiple industries.- Conduct monthly bank reconciliations, year-end journal entries, and financial statement analysis.- Manage client communication, ensuring clarity and accuracy in tax-related matters and business advice.- Perform tax research and planning to optimize clients' tax positions, ensuring compliance with the latest tax laws and regulations.- Serve as the primary liaison between clients and CRA agents, handling inquiries, audits, and other compliance-related matters.- Utilize accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage50, and CanTax to streamline accounting processes and ensure accurate financial reporting.- Manage payroll processing and monthly remittances, including sales tax filing (GST/PST).- Provide basic tax planning services for individuals and corporations, identifying opportunities for tax efficiency.- Manage CRA MyBusiness accounts for corporate clients, ensuring timely and accurate submissions.- Assist clients with general business consulting, including creating and updating business plans, grant writing, loan applications, budgeting, and charitable status applications.

My part-time role is all about multitasking and organization. I work closely with the in-house accountant managing the Inn's accounts payable and accounts receivable on Sage50. On top of bookkeeping, I am also the evening front desk clerk in charge of guest services. Given the variety of my responsibilities managing my time effectively is critical for my continued success in this role.

On top of my customer service responsibilities (answering inquiries, settling payment concerns, booking reservations, recording incident reports, etc.), I was given the opportunity to work on two side projects. I assisted my management team in designing new exit interview questions, and I wrote a sample change management plan and analysis for the transition between reservation systems.
