Profile bio

About Ayla P.

From a young age I had the opportunity to travel to several countries and experience their rich cultures. This has helped to shape my unique world perspective. Throughout my career I have worked alongside various agencies and individuals to achieve common goals, and I know the value of maintaining good relationships. A favorite experience of mine has been my work at the Lost and Found Hostel in the mountains of Panamá. I managed permanent and seasonal staff in unpredictable climates and conditions (culturally, politically and atmospherically!). I worked with local and international guides to operate several adventure tours and cultural experiences. These included horseback riding, waterfall hikes, visits to petroglyphic sites at volcanic hot springs, and hiking trips to the summit of nearby Volcán Barú (11,398 ft. Panamá’s tallest peak!).My experiences in that remote jungle setting are what lead me to pursue wilderness medicine. I recently completed my EMT certification, and I am working towards my new goal for a Wilderness First Responder certification. I am always looking for opportunities to learn and grow, professionally and personally. This year I had my first exciting attempts at rock climbing, a set of skills I am eager to improve upon.My love of mountain life, hiking, and skiing eventually drew me to Northern California in 2011. I am currently working in visitor information services with the Yosemite Conservancy, in the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.Using my expertise and problem-solving skills to help visitors navigate the planning and organization that goes into a safe and well-researched adventure, gives me a great sense of fulfillment in my daily work life.

General Manager

The Lost And Found Hostel

Chiriquí, Panama

Responsible for overall management of a remote hike-in access eco-lodge.Over my 3 years as manager I was able to increase overall gross revenue by 300%. First, I achieved this by increasing prices across all departments. The adjustment was based on market research of current industry standards. I Introduced new programs & tours, increasing overall guest engagement, translating into longer stays. I updated our marketing, improving our online presence, & modernized by investing in promotional videos for social media. We introduced sales promotions during peak season. I created a plan for investment in the infrastructure to support increased water and electrical usage, within eco friendly standards, allowing us to accommodate more guests. This plan included the construction of new lodging facilities, which increased bed space by 40%.I oversaw the management of 200+ volunteers through our international volunteer program. I developed a yoga program, working with our team of certified yoga instructors. The classes & retreats provided increased revenue, & the addition of the program ultimately led to longer stays from our guests, translating into increased sales in all departments. We also saw an overall improved rating for the lodge due to the health-forward environment we curated. At the time of my employment we maintained a 4.9 - 5 star rating across all platforms (Booking, Hostelworld, Google, Facebook, TripAdvisor).Due to the difficulties of maintaining a consistent staff in a remote area, I created a professional development program with a strong emphasis on language exchange. Local staff members could take English classes from our ESL certified volunteers. This program functioned as an incentive for our staff to learn English, develop high-value skills, build a resume, & pursue future job opportunities in the tourism industry. Several of those staff members went on to reach higher level tourism jobs, and/or pursued higher education.
