Awarded a competitive research fellowship through the Colorado HIV Research Training Program (CHRTP). Renewed for a 2nd year. In this position I had the opportunity to be involved with two different projects related to HIV pathogenesis. My primary research aim was to understand the mechanism behind CD4+ T cell death in the gut during HIV infection. We developed an in-vitro model system using primary human gut T cells and described the programmed cell death pathways leading to T cell depletion following HIV infection in vitro. My secondary project, was focused on understanding the relationship between inflammation and aging and whether HIV infection alters 'normal' aging.
