About Astrid Eckstein
Life is an adventure! I love to learn and enlarge my horizons.I am an enthusiastic and excited educator, successfully mentoring and training students at all levels. Over time, I have taught students from grade school to graduate school in a wide variety of areas, and enjoy sharing my love of learning and wisdom, focused on practical application. Currently, I learn and laugh alongside my 800 or so students every year. As an expert in experiential and work-integrated learning, I am always striving to find better ways to learn. I am not a person who can say, "If it isn't broken, don't fix it." For better or worse, I am constantly looking to change things up, to see if anything can be tweaked for improvement. In my courses, that means every time I offer them, I am always trying something new to better the learning experience (I need more time in my day). It's even hard for me to order food at restaurants because I always want to try something new.Part of the learning comes from teaching new courses, as well as connecting more broadly to others in a variety of fields and locales. My current passion is integrating the best practices of active and experiential learning into the classroom, in order to get students excited about their futures and to prepare them for the leap into the world beyond school. My desire for life long learning and hands on solutions extends to my personal life as well. I had an idea for a patio in front of our house, where very little could grow due to old tree roots. The patio came to life with a lot of hard work, along with the furniture that I envisioned and built. Over time, we continue to add life to our little retreat; it's a great place to chill and chat with the neighbours. I love persisting to bring new things to life, to create beauty from ashes.
