Research Internship (M.Sc.)
Studying the longitudinal effects of HDL administration following stroke in mice.To study longitudinal effects of HDL administration, a treatment study was conducted using MRI. Mice underwent an acute scan during a 30-min intraluminal MCA occlusion and two follow-up scans on day 1 and 9, all preceded by neurological deficit score and adhesive removal test.
Masterstudent
Literature study. The dual role of inflammation following ischemic stroke: diverging roles of T-cell subtypesThe role of different cell types involved in inflammation following ischemic stroke and their potential to be used as novel therapeutic targets was discussed. It seems that inflammation following ischemic stroke has a dual role that may be exploited for novel treatments by stimulating neuroprotective aspects and inhibiting neurotoxic aspects.
Research Internship (M.Sc.)
Effects of c-Jun, ATF3, SOX11 and STAT3 knockdown on peripheral regeneration in the rat.RNAi was used to silence four transcription factors in order to study their effects on peripheral regeneration. These transcription factors were silenced in the L4 and L5 dorsal root ganglions, usingan AAV injection two weeks before sciatic nerve injury. To validate the knock down, protein levels in the dorsal root ganglions were quantified. Next, percentages of regenerated axons in the sciactic nerve were determined.
Research Internship (B.Asc.)
Rat model for female sexual dysfunction. The goal of this project was to optimize the subpriming rat model for female sexual dysfunction. First, experiments were done to determine the correct dosages of estradiol and progesterone for injections following ovariectomy. Next, the model was validated by testing testosterone propionate with or without vardenafil. These treatments already seemed to have promising results in humans.
Research Internship (B.Asc.)
Neuroanatomical analysis of aminergic - prefrontal interactions in the rat.To study some of the underlying neural coding for attention processes in de medial prefrontal circuit a retrograde tacer was injected into the mPFC. This tracer is then transported back through the axons into the cell body of cells projecting to the mPFC. Using immunohistochemistry, cells in the brain were stained both for dopamine or serotonin, and for GABA, which also is suspected to play a strong role in attention. When a cell was triple stained it meant that that cell projected to the mPFC, contained a specific neurotransmitter and contained GABA.
