Conducted my graduate research on the geochemistry and mineralogy of sulfur deposits and other materials at a unique field site in the Canadian High Arctic, funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA. Classwork and other graduate student endeavors focused on geobiology, astrobiology, instrumentation, and the communication of science.

While pursuing undergraduate study in astrophysics and geochemistry, I served as an undergraduate research assistant in the Templeton Geomicrobiology Lab on hydrogen production from water-rock reactions. Primary responsibilities included work on rock crushing, XRD, gas chromatography, and x-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Taught martial arts, including Tang Soo Do, Isshin Ryu Karate, and Okinawan Kobudo. Also focused on modern combatives and self protection methods. My classes also often involved a good deal of physical training, with a focus on bodyweight exercises.

Through the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships in Oceanography (SURFO) program, I worked in the lab of Tatiana Rynearson, Ph.D., where I conducted a 10 week project concerning the comparative study of metabolic genes from spatially segregated isolates of the marine diatom, Ditylum brightwellii.
