I'm a friendly and resourceful professional with over twenty years of very diverse experience in IT operations. I've been lucky enough to work at every step of the software production lifecycle for some great companies, developing an easygoing but dedicated work style. Plenty of folks are calling it devops these days.I love to solve challenging problems with technology, whilst working with interesting people!

Senior Operations EngineerMercedes-Benz Tech Innovation Jan 2017 - PresentStuttgart, Baden-WΓΌrttemberg, GermanyIβm working as part of a small team running platform operations for Daimlerβs customer and vehicle state management source-of-truth backend systems - running on Azure, provisioned via Terraform and automated via Azure DevOps. Weβre focussing on providing self-service tooling to the 7 development teams currently working on breaking up two monoliths into a growing fleet of microservices that are steadily being put together to absolve them. I take every opportunity to sprinkle my shell code with stupid emoji and try to make people smile even when exit codes are greater than zero. -
Systems AdministratorMax Planck Institutes TΓΌbingen May 2011 - Dec 2016I was primary contact within the Perceiving Systems department for all computing requirements. I maintained and supported the groupβs direct computing needs, from the desktop to the datacentre. This included a modest estate of around 50 servers. Responsible for all aspects of design, improvement and delivery of 3D/Dynamic (4D) scanning infrastructure, I worked with researchers as well as external technical performers to keep things running smoothly during trials and data collection. I was deeply involved in the development of web applications to support and improve computing quality of life for the group's scientists and students. I was the departmentβs βarmchairβ designer and provided guidance, artwork and assets for the look and feel of both internal and external applications and documents. I spent much of my time automating tasks and state with chef and ansible, and managing an ever-increasing amount of storage infra (a little over 1PB at the end of 2016) on Dell SAN systems and ZFS hosts. -
Senior Operations EngineerSony Computer Entertainment Europe Mar 2010 - Apr 2011London, United KingdomOne of four permanent staff working in the Online Technology Group's Production Support/Operations Engineering team, I provided support and consultancy to development, testing and production teams with an emphasis on application platforms and server side systems. This included release planning and management, deployment testing and load testing as well as diagnosing and solving issues in production environments.I was heavily involved in load testing and production readiness work for several high-profile websites which included high levels of game integration (www.singstar.com, www.killzone.com). I was a key resource in an ongoing effort to improve management of infrastructure for development/test environments using a test-first 'Infrastructure as code' approach - with the goal of being able to create and destroy entire game environments and load test simulators within minutes using Chef and several cloud-based providers. This was part of a larger effort to produce a full 'dev to ops' toolchain including fully automated monitoring, log archiving and integration with game team's continuous build systems. -

Environment Support EngineerCapital One Dec 2004 - Sep 2007I supported a number of Development, System Test and Integration Testing environments. Responsible for builds and deployments of internally and externally developed software, I worked closely with project management, design, development and production support teams to provide smooth and efficient delivery of enhancements to systems during all phases of a projectβs lifecycle. Day to day, I was responsible for the monitoring of around 30 UNIX servers, running HP-UX and Solaris. My team owned several processes surrounding build and deployment methods, and I took a very active role in the maturity of these tools with a strong view on automating and improving time to deployment. I was also responsible for support of several SCM related systems, focusing on Source Control and Change/Defect Management.I was involved in Agile/Lean coaching in an attempt to change the way Capital One deliver software to the business from the get-go. -
3Rd Line Support TechnicianSouth Holland District Council Oct 2001 - Dec 2004As a key member of a Third Level support team, I was responsible for the administration of all application and database servers. This included the maintenance and monitoring of ten Citrix servers, the main platform for delivering over twenty applications to the Councilβs 350 users. My role covered all aspects of installation and upgrades to both new and existing systems, as well as improvements to internally developed ones. I was heavily involved in the day-to-day administration of the Windows infrastructure, being responsible for the Active Directory, Exchange Mail, Internet Security and Acceleration, Content Management, File and Print servers. I provided support for the fifteen Oracle and ten Microsoft SQL databases on site, and regularly wrote reports in SQL, PL/SQL and Oracle Reports 6i.
