I come from a versatile background of education and have an intense love for learning. My first passion has always been music, and so I completed a music degree with my principle applied instrument being piano. Partway through my degree, I could not deny the pull to delve into the sciences, so I also completed a second major in Biology.I am pleased to have found success in both fields, having taught piano for many years and have had the pleasure of working with Agriculture Canada as a Food Microbiology Lab Technician immediately following my graduation in 2012 from Acadia University. However, I wanted more.The one thing I learned about myself over the years was that I thrive in environments that require collaboration: much like performing in a musical ensemble where everyone has a role to play. So, I set out to find a profession that would blend my love for teaching and working in a collaborative setting. I soon set my sights on becoming a Registered Nurse, and completed an After-Degree Program from the University of Alberta in 2016. It was the best decision I had ever made.I decided I wanted to work in Women's Health as a student and was placed in Postpartum for my preceptorship. Over the past 5 years, my nursing world has encompassed the areas of: Antepartum, Labour and Delivery, Postpartum and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. I was comfortable there.And then the pandemic hit and I was redeployed to ICU for an entire year. At first, I was overwhelmed, I knew nothing of the adult world or of palliative care. I only knew the relatively healthy world of Maternity. I chose to embrace the challenge and learned a lot of skills on the floor. I asked questions and asked for special certifications to be able to help on the floor. I learned to be comfortable being uncomfortable and who to go to for help when I didn't know the answers. Slowly, my confidence grew and when the end date for my redeployment approached, I felt as if the ICU was where I belonged. So, I applied and accepted a position. Life has a strange way of presenting challenges and I will embrace every opportunity to learn and grow .
