Having presented on behalf of the Department for International Trade (DIT) to extoll the virtues of export potential in the UK following the success of Astute Graphics (consistent 90% export), I was asked to become an Export Champion based in the West Midlands. This voluntary, occasional role will allow me to promote export, the critical services of the DIT in the UK as well as hopefully assist in mentoring others.

As the first in-house graphic designer for the group of companies, I was responsible for generating graphics for show stands, printed brochures and corporate material. A key role was also the development of the company websites, ensuring I had to advance my knowlegde of CSS, PHP and MySQL in addition to HTML.My existing and ever-evolving hands-on experieince with various IT platforms led to specifying, sourcing and maintaining Windows server systems including critical on and off-site backups. Catering for administration/sales and design engineering departments required different approaches, but my engineering training did assist when relating to the specific requirements from technical users.Being the sole graphic designer in the organisation brought its challenges along with freedom to consider alternative soutions. This included establishing in-house product photography and pre-press proofing.

• Launch and lifecycle management of critical software design projects including Cerilica Vantage (design and publishing), RiScript (PostScript and PDF system), TRUISM II (ink simulation technology)• Budget administration of all aspects of projects undertaken including business plans, costings and revenue analysis• Establishing and promoting good working relationships with UK and overseas sub-contractors• Marketing in a wide variety of media including website, magazine adverts and editorials, national trade shows and overseas dealers• Design for print issues to ensure successful production and quality, including specialised arbitrary ink handling
