About Vivek Astvansh

I am a member of McGill University's Desautels Faculty of Management. I teach marketing strategy in McGill University's BCom (course code = MRKT 354) and PhD (MRKT 710) programs, and business analytics in MBA (MRKT 658), and Master of Management in Analytics (MRKT 671, MRKT 673) programs.I am also an adjunct professor of data science at Indiana University's Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. I teach a course named "Data Science in Business" (DSCI-D590) for the MS in Data Science program. My current research examines how corporate governance actors (e.g., short sellers that have a short position, activist institutional investors that have a long position, NGOs that hold a nonfinancial stake) shape a firm’s actions that can affect consumers. From 2018 to 2023, I was an assistant professor in the department of marketing at Indiana University's Kelley School of Business.Prior to my academic career, I worked in the technology industry for 12 years, across different countries and roles. I started my career as a software programmer, then moved toward selling and marketing analytics solutions.

Simply put, Dewey Data Inc. aims to become academics' alternative to WRDS. And a preferred alternative. My job was to help Dewey realize this aim. More specifically, I received data sets from Dewey's partners, understood the data sets, and suggested research questions that the data sets could help answer. These questions enabled Dewey to pitch its platform to business schools.
