I lead a small team responsible for much of O'Reilly's publishing software, a heterogeneous mix of in-house systems and open source packages that handle authoring, collaboration, and distribution of O'Reilly titles to the O'Reilly Learning Platform and resellers.

As a senior software engineer, I led department-wide security initiatives to promote education and best practices. Within my team, I also promoted testing best practices, advocated and contributed to system upgrades, and mentored junior developers through code review and pairing.

As a software engineer, I primarily worked on the large, Ruby on Rails application that helped make O'Reilly's conferences go. Projects included improvements to the user registration process, API design and development, enhanced registration and RFID checkin, Bitcoin payment support, and a large internationalization effort to allow the software to be used at events in China and elsewhere.I served as the security lead for my squad, evaluating our code and dependencies for vulnerabilities, and participating in educating O'Reilly's engineering team on security matters. I also helped plan the OSCON Open Source Convention, and provided internal training to O'Reilly's IT department on Ruby, version control, and other skills as needed.

I joined O'Reilly to work on an agile team on multiple applications written in Ruby, Python, and Perl. I played a key role integrating a third party single sign-on system into new and legacy applications.

Binary BBQ is a semi-formal name to the consulting work I've done since the 1990s. I primarily focus on web application development in the education research space and use Ruby on Rails. I currently maintain an online directory system for educators, and a software as a service platform to help researchers monitor adoption of instructional interventions at remote schools.

Author of Everyday Rails Testing with RSpec, now with 6,000+ readers. Everyday Rails Testing with RSpec presents a strategy to learn Rails application testing the way I did, by starting with a simple, existing application, then building test coverage layer by layer.

I've been doing occasional freelance software and website development for small businesses, nonprofits, and academic entities since the late 90s. Most recently I helped a small startup develop a customized e-commerce and digital distribution site, using Rails, Bootstrap, ActiveAdmin, and the Stripe credit card processing service. In the past I've also provided freelance PHP and Java support, but I don't focus on these technologies these days.
