As a software engineer, I primarily worked on the large, Ruby on Rails application that helped make O'Reilly's conferences go. I currently maintain an online directory system for educators, and a software as a service platform to help researchers monitor adoption of instructional interventions at remote schools.

Author of Everyday Rails Testing with RSpec, now with 6,000+ readers. Everyday Rails Testing with RSpec presents a strategy to learn Rails application testing the way I did, by starting with a simple, existing application, then building test coverage layer by layer.

I've been doing occasional freelance software and website development for small businesses, nonprofits, and academic entities since the late 90s. Most recently I helped a small startup develop a customized e-commerce and digital distribution site, using Rails, Bootstrap, ActiveAdmin, and the Stripe credit card processing service. In the past I've also provided freelance PHP and Java support, but I don't focus on these technologies these days.
