About Ataria Sharman

Ataria Sharman (Ngāpuhi, Tapuika) is a writer and editor. Born and raised in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, she now lives in Hikurangi, Whangārei. Ataria has a Master of Arts and spent a year researching mana wahine and atua wāhine. Huia published her children’s fiction fantasy novel Hine and the Tohunga Portal in 2021, a finalist in the 2022 New Zealand Book Awards for Youth and Children.The creator of Awa Wahine, an organisation that aims to uplift the creativity of wāhine Māori, Ataria regularly publishes a semi-annual magazine and previously a collection of writings on the atua wāhine by the group. She was formerly the editor of The Pantograph Punch. Her articles and essays have been published in The Spinoff, Stuff NZ, Sunday magazine, Broadsheet, Heritage NZ magazine, The Pantograph Punch, E-Tangata, Te Whē Journal of Māori Literature, Awa Wahine magazine and the Māori Literature Trust.
