In my current role as senior postdoc, I conduct epidemiological research on the risk factors and prognosis of small acute brain infarcts.

To further understand mechanisms of cerebral small vessel disease (SVD), I established the prospective RUN DMC - InTENse study, a high-frequency serial MRI study in which individuals were scanned at monthly intervals for 10 months in a row. With this study, I revealedthe role of acute (micro)infarcts, detected on diffusion-weighted imaging (MRI), in the origin of SVD.

Research project at MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative disease and Dept of Neurology, J. Philip Kistler Stroke Research Center, Harvard Medical School.In a combined ex vivo MRI-histopathology study I investigated the pathology of small diffusion-weighted imaging lesions in cases with cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA). I demonstrated the acute ischemic nature of small diffusion-weighted imaging lesions.

I studied the association between white matter hyperintensities and FDG-PET metabolism in white matter tract-connected brain regions, using data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Research skills: preprocessing of neuroimaging data using SPM and MATLAB, tractography using ExploreDTI, statistical analyses using R.

I investigated the relationships between integrity of brain white matter fiber tracts and hippocampal subfield volumes in early Alzheimer disease and normal aging, using 3 T diffusion-weighted MRI data and 7 T structural MRI data. In addition, I carried out neuropsychological assessments of patients with and without diabetes mellitus as part of the Utrecht Diabetic Encephalopathy Study.
