Muhammad Athallah Arsyaf is an intercalating medical student at Newcastle University. He aspires to decentralize medicine and become a “physician-diplomat” working in positions responsible for medical advocacy, universal coverage of healthcare, and rights-based medicine. Athallah has also been extensively involved in several research internships at his home institution including at the Indonesian Medical Education & Research Institute (IMERI-FKUI) in areas of clinical nutrition, medical education, and aerospace medicine. At the moment, he is involved in various student-led advisory positions such as the Lancet Commission on Medicine and the Holocaust (LCM&H) and the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH). In terms of achievements and non-academic pursuits, Athallah was recipient to the 'Excellence in Health Professions Education' grant at the 13th Jakarta Meeting on Medical Education for his work in Global Health Education (GHE) scholaship. He was also awarded the Verbal Commendation at the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia-Pacific in Harvard WorldMUN 2021 and the 1st Prize Award on the Global Health Case Competition in the World Pre-Health Conference held by Harvard University.

In late 2020, Israeli and German scholars sent a proposal for a commission on Medicine and the Holocaust to Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of The Lancet. This was accepted and resulted in the announcement of a new Lancet Commission on Medicine and the Holocaust: Historical Evidence, Implications for Today, Teaching for Tomorrow [1] on the International Holocaust Remembrance Day January 27, 2021. The title of the Commission describes its goals: 1. Historical Evidence: Identify, analyze and describe the various areas of historical evidence regarding medicine, Nazism and the Holocaust.2. Implications for Today: Describe the specific implications of Medicine, Nazism and the Holocaust for medicine today, including medical professionalism and medical ethics.3. Teaching for Tomorrow: Identify, describe, and implement effective educational approaches to include historical insights from Medicine, Nazism and the Holocaust in Health Professions curricula. The Commission members form an interdisciplinary, inclusive and international group of scholars of the history of medicine, practicing physicians, bioethicists and medical educators. Its work is supported by an international Student Advisory Council.
