Built a 24 person engineering team monetizing Pandora's audio streaming apps, delivering ~90% of Pandora's ads revenue. Engineering lead of Pandora's ad-supported on-demand initiative, Premium Access, organizing the execution of 100+ contributors. Premium Access, temporarily unlocks the subscription tier for the ad-supported listener after watching 15sec of a video ad, delivering true ad-supported on-demand for first time in the audio streaming industry. This rewarded ad product delivered increases in both monetization and user retention. Premium access became Pandora's #1 driver of subscriptions immediately upon launch. Represented Pandora ad engineering with 10+ partner companies, reviewing contracts, establishing SLAs, partnering to resolve delivery issues when they arose. Led the rewrite of ad rendering code and user experience underlying a $1B+/year ad business, leveraging A/B tests to deliver without revenue downsides. Grew team by 100% YoY for 3 years in a row. Collaborated closely with recruiting to build a strong hiring funnel. Updated software development process and tools usage (git, JIRA, Jenkins, A/B, feature flags) as the team scaled to keep them running efficiently. Made the first dev-tools team hires supporting client engineers. Led the delivery of Pandora's first rewarded ad product, Sponsored Listening, which rewarded the listener with an hour of ad-free listening after watching 15sec of sponsor video. Sponsored Listening increased listener retention by reducing ad load to 1/10th during the ad-free reward hour, increased monetization by more than 10x on a CPM basis, and delivered huge gains for the advertiser in consumer appreciation and brand recognition.
