Athulya Simon is a biomechanics researcher who applies data analysis skills to enhance human health and performance. She is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at University of Massachusetts Amherst, working on the Study of Aging and Gait Energetics (SAGE) project, which investigates the biomechanical changes due to a prolonged treadmill walk. She collects and processes motion capture and muscle activity data, writes scripts to automate data processing, and applies machine learning algorithms to analyze results.Athulya earned her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech, where she studied the biomechanics of various lifting styles with and without passive back support exoskeletons. She designed and conducted experiments involving human subjects, using motion capture, electromyography, and statistical analysis tools. She also has an MS in Robotics and a BS in Biomedical Engineering from Northwestern University, where she gained experience in building an MRI phantom, using machine learning for sign language detection, and programming the Baxter research robot. Athulya is passionate about engineering, music, and sports, and enjoys organizing intramural teams and playing in bands.
