Atila collaborates with Clients to generate concept ideas and to develop cost-effective structural engineering solutions for projects. He is passionate about performance-based design and the pursuit of resilient designs. Atila is a Senior Principal with Degenkolb, and the firm-wide Design Practice Area Leader. As an industry-renowned structural and seismic specialist, he collaborates with owners, architects and contractors by developing wide-spectrum structural concepts to inform the architectural design explorations and to drive cost-effective solutions. During his career, he has worked on a wide range of challenging projects with responsibilities from Principal-in-Charge to Lead Structural Engineer. This is demonstrated through the body of work, which includes the Allegiant Stadium, Seattle Public Library, Denver Art Museum addition, San Francisco Federal Building, LACMA BCAM, LACMA Resnick Pavilion, Ford-Otosan Car Plant, and the Caltech Broad Center for Biological Sciences, among many others. Passionate about performance-based design, Atila is a highly regarded global seismic expert who has led the seismic design of several base-isolated projects, including the Pine & Sakura Basaksehir Hospital in Istanbul, Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center (where the seismically isolated Space Shuttle Endeavour will be displayed in vertical launch ready position at the California Science Center), Taipei Performing Arts Center and the International Airport Terminal at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen International Airport. Atila, in addition to holding various leadership positions and leading multidisciplinary project teams, has also specialized in structural and seismic engineering. Following the damage in steel structures observed during the 1994 Northridge earthquake, Atila was responsible for the development of an alternate steel moment connection. He led the analytical and experimental work in the development of the “reduced beam section” concept. The six full-scale specimens successfully tested at UC San Diego in 1995 were the first ones to be tested in the United States. Atila is a council member of the Los Angeles Tall Buildings and Structural Design Council and leads the Council’s Resiliency Committee.
