Angus T. McKinnon has a broad advocacy practice that has an emphasis on class action defence work, complex commercial disputes, and insolvency and restructuring litigation. He also has extensive experience in employment law matters, directors' and officers' liability and professional negligence claims.Active in class action defence work since 1997, Mr. McKinnon has represented large corporations in the mining, consumer and health science products, power generation, manufacturing and educational sectors. He has acted for the Trustee of the Estate of Bre-X Minerals Ltd., the University of Toronto, Ontario Power Generation, Novopharm, BMW Canada, Aurelian Resources and various school boards in a wide variety of different class actions.Mr. McKinnon has appeared before all levels of Court in Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition to those class action matters that have come before the Courts, he regularly advises clients in respect to threatened class action proceedings. He has advised a prominent national franchisor that was threatened with a class action by its franchisees, foreign lenders considering loans to companies targeted by securities class actions, and investors and shareholders in companies threatened by class actions.Mr. McKinnon has represented clients in private arbitrations, mediations and before domestic and regulatory tribunals. He has appeared as counsel before the Canada Industrial Relations Tribunal, the Ontario Securities Commission and the Human Rights Tribunal and acted as counsel to regulatory tribunals such as the Ontario Pension Commission.Mr. McKinnon has extensive trial experience in a range of actions involving real property disputes, wrongful dismissal actions, medical product actions and professional liability.
