Electoral Mapping 2018Right from the beginning, we had the task to map the Pakistan General Elections, 2018 – in Punjab to be specific. First and foremost, scanned maps were obtained from the Election Commission of Pakistan and Urban Unit which were georeferenced in the ArcGIS environment. For georeferencing, we used boundary shapefiles of districts in question. The scanned maps were a representation of electoral constituencies, which were then digitized. NA's being the larger units were done first, from which we cut down the PPs. A scale was set to standardize the digitization from these generalized scanned maps. Few errors here and there in the geometry (overlapping, etc.) were fixed by applying topological rules. These constituency boundaries were then used in the dashboard to visually and spatially display the election results and trends.Punjab Police Crime MappingAfter elections, we started working on crime mapping. The challenge was to prepare jurisdiction datasets which would then be used for efficient location-based crime reporting and analysis. Scanned maps were obtained from police stations across the province, which was georeferenced accordingly with their district boundary shapefiles. Jurisdictions – on levels of the police station, beat and circle were digitized from the georeferenced maps – coming from larger to a smaller unit.Mapping AutomationUsing ArcPy, we also automated the production of maps and conversion from one spatial file format to other (e.g. KMZ to SHP)
