A strong commitment to visual arts as a form of knowledge production to understand and intervene in local, national and transnational dimensions. In particular, over the past two decades I have explored the physical, historical, spiritual, and political significance of water to the urban environment and population of my city, New Delhi, through artworks that incorporate sculpture, painting, installation, video, photography, and performance. Building upon this standpoint, I have carried out many years of visual research at multiple locations in India and at very diverse sites in both the global south and the global north. In an attempt to understand water within urban and non-urban environments, my practice engages with many of its physical, emotive, historical, cultural, religious and political manifestations. I further implicate and participate in the politics of water by subtly juxtaposing these manifestations with the significance of water as an essential human right, maintaining a sense of urgency in my works. Not only have my research and practice shown the importance of visual thinking incorporating multiple disciplines across the social sciences and humanities but they have also demonstrated the criticality of taking forward the project/s of creating a visual knowledge discourse.http://www.atulbhalla.com/home.php?id=11
