The aim of my PhD thesis is the study of synchronization issues and performance analysis at physical (PHY) of next generation 5G wireless cellular system employing flexible non-orthogonal multicarrier waveforms. Because of strict requirements on synchronism, actual 4th generation cellular system based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are characterized by a high out of band (OOB) emission and cyclic prefix overhead, which limits spectral efficiency, and high latency, which limits real-time applications. Based on this, the main motivations behind the study of new non-orthogonal multicarrier waveforms is that the underlying design principles synchronism and orthogonality of the PHY layer of mobile radio systems constitute a major obstacle for the envisioned 5G service architecture. Hence, there is a clear motivation for an innovative and in part disruptive re-design of the PHY layer for next generation cellular systems.
