Growing up in India when my father was building power plants, it was a life changing experience to see how electricity transformed the lives of the poorest. It was indeed first of the many “energy transitions” I have experienced. Much later, in the blink of an eye, I went from being a reservoir engineer in Alaska to lead a fledgling “thin-film” solar manufacturing operations. Scaling the solar business as COO of bp Solar was a formative experience. Although we were at the forefront of transforming the solar PV sector, we did not call it “Energy Transition”. Along the way, I helped bp transform its technology strategy, help setup two major research organizations in the UK and the US and have served on the boards of several companies and organizations. I have had the great fortune to work with and learn from true experts and pioneers in the world of energy and climate change. I believe in constantly challenging myself and separating hype from reality. I believe that we are at the beginning of major transformation of the global energy system. This transformation will be a marathon and not a sprint. We do not need any more 2050 targets, we need specific and measurable goals for 2025 and 2030. Technology and Innovation are already leading the way but pace and scale must accelerate.And any path to net-zero must travel via Asia and Africa. As we are learning from the Covid pandemic, we are in this together. Climate change is already proving to be the great equalizer. In my current role as the Chief Energy Strategist for IHS Markit, I study and analyze the current thinking on Energy Technologies, Climate Change, Renewables, IOC/NOC Strategy, Emissions Management, ESG and more, i.e., many aspects of “Energy Transition”. It is worth remembering that energy systems are hardware and not software, version change can take years even decades, not minutes.
