Mowed and cared for 30+ parks in the Goleta, Santa Barbara County community. Picked up trash, weeded, and managed ice plant around beach walkways.

Working to restore a large plot of land that was previously a golf course, I transplant plants from dirt to small pots at a nursery, transplant plants from the pots to the ground at the restoration site, remove invasive weeds, and work in crews ranging from 3-8 people. We work in a variety of weather that includes very hot, raining, or warm weather. We also use several hand tools including trowel, shovel, pick axe, and more. Sometimes at festivals, like the Earth Day Festival in Santa Barbara, I volunteer at the information booth to speak with the public about the common and latin names of plants and the importance of restoration work as a whole.

As a park Rover, I collected fees at the campground and other recreation areas. I also maintained the campground by preparing campsites for new guests, maintaining safety procedures for fire rings, painted picnic tables, and helped guests with any of their concerns. As a maintenance worker at the Sly Park Recreation Area, I cleaned bathrooms, fixed signs, picked up trash, split firewood, and performed any duties asked of me by the park rangers. Both positions required me to drive their vehicles.

Conducted botanic surveys of rare and invasive species around the El Dorado National forest. Used a number of hand tools to maintain trails and invasive species, including: rock bar, extractigator, loppers, hand treatment, and others. We bagged the invasive species and threw them in the trash to avoid their spread. Worked in a crew of 6. Gained knowledge of plant identification.

With this special branch in the US Forest Service, I spent time in a real-life lab setting extracting DNA from douglas fir trees from Washington, and other tree species from the coast. My duties included labeling DNA tubes, labeling DNA tube racks, storing DNA properly in cold settings, cutting the specimens into very tiny pieces, and taking pictures of gels. Some tools used included a scalpel, plexi glass, tweezers, alcohol (to clean), DNA tubes, and DNA tube racks.

In a crew of 8 others, with a crew leader, we did trail maintenance in desolation wilderness and on other lands, erosion control in fire districts, restored campsites, and worked at the nursery for reforestation. We used a number of hand tools including: crosscut saw, hand saw, Mcleod, shovel, rake, feather and wedge, rock bag, rock bar, axe, tamping bar, hoe, and many others.
