About Aubrey Watson

In my mind, there is no excuse for failure. I do whatever it takes to meet the high expectations set by myself and others in order to leave every situation better than I found it. Many of my associates would attest to my high achievement and maturity. I graduated early from high school with 26 college credits, completed my undergraduate degree in three years with a 3.98 GPA, and graduated in the top 10% of my law school class. Many of my colleagues come to me with questions and concerns because they know I will go out of my way to help them. In every job I have, I look for opportunities to solve complex problems, to challenge myself, and to learn. I approach challenges with a clear plan to increase the likelihood of success, because there is no excuse for failure. Before attending law school, I had a firm belief in justice based on my innate sense for right and wrong. I wanted everyone to be held accountable for 100% of the wrong things they had done. However, in recent years, I've learned the importance of grace and second chances, too. In the wise words of Bryan Stevenson, "each of us is more than the worst thing we've ever done."

My main role is to research legal issues in civil cases and draft bench memos/draft orders to advise the Magistrate Judge how to rule on non-dispositive issues. I've attended hundreds of civil and criminal hearings and consulted with several federal judges. I have also been responsible for managing cases to ensure parties comply with deadlines and cases continue moving. Since I am the first term law clerk in my chambers, I have also worked on creating a chambers' manual for future law clerks.

I worked closely with U.S. Probation officers and the Judges in the Northern District to craft appropriate sentences for defendants in our custody. Due to increased case loads and COVID-19, I often had to handle issues on my own with limited supervision. I had the unique opportunity to be involved in the Court's response to McGirt issues.
