About Adam Love

I create Audio DSP (Digital Signal Processing) algorithms and solutions that create value for and empower the people that use them across industries including music production, mobile audio/telecommunications, and hearing health from the web to desktop to mobile and ultra-low power embedded platforms. I also enjoy and have great appreciation for the benefits of working with customers directly to solve problems and improve project and product outcomes. I am very fortunate to love what I do professionally outside of work as well. In fact, that's often where I do my best work.My work has been found in consumer devices including smartphones (a patented algorithm that adaptively optimized audio quality based on position and seal of a device relative to ear, highlighted on an episode of Daily Planet), mobile audio apps, hearing aids marketed and sold by a wide range of companies (adaptive algorithms running on ultra-low power multi-core DSPs), audiology fitting software (electro-acoustic modelling), professional audio software and plugins, and has been used by a few folks making music around the world, powering more than 1.5 million tracks along the way (MajorDecibel instant mastering, initiated in my spare time as a free service for musicians).My background is in Electrical Engineering but today I work primarily with audio software and firmware (and sometimes hardware). I'm comfortable deriving necessary equations from first principles, MATLAB simulations, C/C++, and even fixed-point math implemented in assembly (having also defined and implemented fixed-point audio DSP libraries). I've also acquired some front and back-end web experience, bare metal server deployment and management, as well as some UI/UX graphical design and development experience where it was useful or important to understand. I have significant hands-on experience performing electro-acoustic measurements using professional equipment in acoustically controlled labs. I have a strong understanding of acoustic principles, psychoacoustics, and hearing science. I am capable of operating with a high degree of autonomy, but appreciate and value the benefits of working within a team.Proud father to two incredible kids that continue to amaze me every day—the most important things to me.     Member of the Applied DSP Group with broad responsibilities, including the design and implementation of adaptive audio algorithms on ultra-low power multi-core DSPs for hearing aids.Research/ Algorithms:• Developed a subband-adaptive feedback cancellation algorithm with novel state machine.• Developed a highly-configurable multi-channel wide dynamic range compressor to meet clinical audiological specifications (simulated and modelled in MATLAB, and implemented in assembly on an Ezairo 7100).• Developed a wideband AGCo.• Experience with active noise cancellation.Software/ Modelling:• Developed an advanced system-level model for predicting input/output levels and frequency response, including acoustics, DAC and ADC, pre-amplifiers, and algorithm configuration, accounting for filterbank and inter-channel compression effects to meet clinical audiological specifications.• Designed framework for converting the model from MATLAB to C using MATLAB Coder for integration with hearing aid fitting software.System/ Optimization:• Profiling cycles usage across multiple cores and implementing both assembly optimizations and multi-core load balancing solutions.Software/ Tools:• Developing a MATLAB simulation and unit test framework.• Upgraded legacy python code and developed a MATLAB wrapper for running digital tests on a development board.Tuning/ Testing:• Familiar with test microphones, setting up, calibrating, and using Audio Precision measurement equipment.• Experience with Frye FONIX.• Experience with HATS and B&K audio test equipment.• Expert listening and tuning for compression, expansion, limiting, and adaptive algorithms.Team Building/ Mentorship:• Support for Applied DSP team members and students (both undergraduate and graduate) in general development practices, DSP, audio algorithms, hearing science, fixed-point arithmetic, critical listening exercises, and additional support during integration with software team members.
