Zoonotic and Viral Disease LaboratoryPerformed molecular screening methods for a multitude of tropical infectious diseases on samples obtained from a cohort from Starr County along the U.S.-Mexico border. Utilized ELISA, PCR, IFA, and PRNT to detect the presence of relevant antibodies and various pathogenic organisms. Adhered to general lab safety protocols and those specific for the handling of infectious disease organisms. Gained an increased understanding of principles of immunology as they relate to immune responses associated with specific pathogens and vaccine development.

Provided assistance with activities related to the VOCA grant, monitored media related to the Santa Fe High School shooting to ensure a healthy healing environment for survivors, and prepared materials that will be applied in future criminal incident disasters. Conducted literature reviews on topics as requested by the VOCA team and summarized coordinated response activities for future applications. Evaluated media relating to the SFHS shooting to prevent further trauma from impacting survivors and families, and to assure that DBHS was constantly informed about developments. Created planning materials using the current scientific literature and existing planning resources to facilitate a seamless and efficient response to large scale criminal incidents

I had the opportunity to teach middle school girls about health promotion and the importance of physical activity in addition to lacrosse skills. Many of the girls had never played a sport before, but throughout the season they learned how to be competitive, not only in sports, but holistically.

Led efforts related to environmental protection advocacy through engagement with public service leaders, delivery of community-facing events, and communications distributed to large network of environmental advocates.  Attended city hall meetings and tracked changes in environmental legislation and summarized information for CEC newsletter subscribers.  Assisted in the development, outreach and delivery for a mayoral candidate forum and environmental film festival. Served as lead editor for yearly resource manual containing information for CEC and 30+ sister organizations while strengthening those working relationships.
