The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) co-convened the Global Tailings Review to establish an international standard for the safe management of tailings storage facilities that can be applied to all tailings facilities wherever they are located and whoever operates them. Supported by a multi-stakeholder advisory group, a panel of multi-disciplinary experts have produced a Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management to be published in August 2020.

Driving the sustainability agenda across the Mining segment within larger steel business.Responsibilities included:Risk management- Ownership of risk management process.- Review of Investment Committee submissions and risk components of major capital project studies.- Managing relationships and reporting to Group Risk function.Overseeing stakeholder management- Participation on the EITI mining sub-constituency.- Government relations and community engagement oversight.- Managing external corporate partnerships.- Provision of targeted NGO support at asset level.- Provision of strategic advice to assets on stakeholder mapping and engagement.Continuous improvement- Rolling out Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining programme.- Provision of targeted support to Liberian operation.- Development of a comprehensive energy strategy proposal.

A wide ranging role that included:Managing the Global HSE Function: - Annual financial and strategic planning.- Stewardship of functional controls and performance- Supporting annual investor sustainability workshops- Promoting collaboration and inclusion across the function and with other functions.- Acting as point of contact and communication for the function. - Supporting numerous functional projects.Supporting the Group Executive HSE: - Ensuring Executive Committee and Board deadlines were met and actions addressed effectively. - Coordination and review of submissions to the Sustainability Committee of the Board and acting as Secretary to the Committee for a period. - Preparing monthly CEO dashboard reports. - Speech writing and the production of internal communications.- Facilitating and contributing to the HSE subject matter expert review of proposals to the Investment Committee.Management of the HSE Senior leadership team: - Facilitating engagement with other functions.- Managing the forward business schedule. - Coordinating the annual demand planning process. Overseeing action management. - Designing the programme and managing periodic face to face conferences.Coordinating Rio Tinto’s input to the International Council on Mining and Metals: - Ensuring the company's sustainability priorities were championed. - Representing Rio Tinto at the biannual members’ meetings, building networks with member companies and providing feedback into the relevant functions within Rio Tinto. HSEC Systems design: Design of simple, adaptable and repeatable HSEC management systems to support diverse operations in multiple countries. Assurance: Management of the annual HSEC assurance programme to ensure compliance with Group and ISO certification requirements. Participation in numerous Business Conformance Audits and delivered first party internal assurance auditor training.Risk and reporting: Supported the facilitation of and participation in many multi-disciplinary risk workshops. Prepared regular and annual HSEC performance reporting and annual improvement plans. Project management: Managed multiple change programmes including a global document management system, an HSEC skills development programme across multiple geographies and cultures, the embedding of multiple core technical solutions (including SAP) and an integrated risk management process.
