My training in molecular biology and genetics and my natural curiosity have helped uncover unique story angles and engagement approaches during my last 18 years in marketing and communications. Working primarily in academic medicine, I have led teams to leverage great stories and develop award-winning strategies for research communications, media relations and public affairs programs aimed at all types of stakeholder audiences. I am a fierce proponent of diversity and inclusion because people from different backgrounds bring not only different ideas but also different ways of thinking that can challenge and pressure-test good ideas to make them great. My teams' successes can be attributed to strong critical thinking and a deep focus on excellence that have enabled them to bring quantifiable results aligned with institutional goals. As an advisor and a strategist, I have served as an institutional spokesperson and counseled faculty members and institutional leaders on talking points for sensitive issues and crises; and I led a public relations campaign to assist government affairs colleagues in defeating proposed state legislation that did not serve our institution. I have successfully led and overseen planning of various strategic communications initiatives including two Nobel Prize announcements, and developing an annual science writers event aimed at improving journalist access to institutional experts and ensuring more accurate reporting on biomedical science.
