About Audrey Kono
I was fortunate to grow up near the ocean in California, and the environmental education I had drew me into learning about the natural world, climate change, and sustainability. But not everyone gets that experience. This led me to explore opportunities where I can help connect people to nature, especially those who face significant barriers to access. My college courses and work experiences have shown me the importance of advocating for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within any organization. My remote (and first ever) internship at the Gardena Valley Japanese Cultural Institute in the summer of 2020 sparked my interest in social impact/corporate social responsibility (CSR). I discovered my drive to support local communities as I learned about the people the GVJCI serves, the issues the organization faces, its needs, and how it adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic.I’m still figuring out what I like and where my skills fit best, but I do know that:- DEI will always be at the center of my work, regardless of title- I want to foster an inclusive workplace where people feel like they belong, are supported, and can share their ideas- I value my individual work time on projects, where I can research, wrap my head around the issue, explore different approaches, troubleshoot, and create a draft- I equally enjoy the process of coming together with my team and cross-functional stakeholders to collaborate, look at the big picture, find solutions together, and then continue working on improvements for the final deliverable- I love this planet and I want to connect people to nature, whether in my full-time job or in my free time And I’m always learning. I’m following DEI and social impact/CSR/ESG leaders on LinkedIn to absorb their insights and read the articles they share. Books and podcasts on climate change and sustainability are teaching me about human impact, creative solutions, and inspiring hope. I love listening to my local NPR station to keep up with what’s happening locally in LA and around the world. AirTalk with Larry Mantle on LAist 89.3 is one of my favorites. I am currently based in the Los Angeles area and looking for full-time roles in social impact/corporate social responsibility/environmental social governance (CSR/ESG); diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); sustainability; environmental protection; and coastal access/access to nature.
