Connectedness Pays OffAs a student at St. Mary’s, I had already had enough business experience to understand the power of networking and I took advantage of every opportunity I could to meet the professionals who visited our classroom – and stay in touch with my fellow students. At first, a fellow student helped me connect with the Industrial Engineering Department of Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, TX. I was able to interview and in early April was offered a position as an Industrial Engineer to start after I graduated later in May. It was a dream come true – until they fired their VP and rescinded the opportunity – just two weeks before graduation. Again I was able to use my network when a fellow student recommended that I apply for the CO-OP position at Sony Semiconductor. Though I had already graduated, they were willing to offer me the position through the summer. While I was only there a few months, the learning experience was invaluable, especially in the use of formulas in MS. Excel.Accomplishments while I was there:-- Measured and documented machine and technician processing times in a Class 10 Clean Room environment where semiconductor “chips” were manufactured on silicon wafers; the information was used as calculation parameters for capacity models in Excel.-- Developed and programmed equipment capacity models using the simulation software Extend.p.s. later when I worked for Motorola / Freescale Semiconductor I was able to use my own connectedness to recommend a fellow classmate and a Sony alum for roles as business analysts – both were hired and had successful careers – one of them is still there.

A Quality EducationWhen I saw the ad in the paper, it might as well have read, “Audrey, please apply– between your Associate of Arts in Engineering and your experience as a Calibration Specialist, you are the perfect candidate for the position.” My first position in the Quality Department at Friedrich was as tester within Receiving Inspection. Inspectors would verify physical measurements, while testers would verify physical and mechanical properties – it was like working in a science lab. The beginning of my careerJoining the Army was not something I had planned on doing. But just a few days after graduation, I came home from work to find a message to call John something. It wasn’t too late in the evening, so I returned the call – he was a recruiter. I was laughing to myself when I agreed to meet with him. I graduated from high school on June 19th, and by July 17th, I was at Fort McClellan, Alabama in basic training. Neither of my parents were happy with the decision, but about two years later, my mother told me that it was probably the best thing I could have done given the circumstances.I was competent as a calibration specialist (see description under Education below), and really enjoyed being a soldier. In the Army, I learned what it meant to be a leader, how to work with the bad ones and learn from the good ones. Demonstrating integrity is important in any work environment; it is how our bosses and coworkers know they can trust us. But in the military, you need more than integrity, you need the discipline to act – the ability to do what you are told even when it is something you don’t want to do or don’t agree with or is hard. In my six years of service, I developed the leadership knowledge, skills and abilities that would later form the foundation of a successful work ethic.Some achievements I’m proud of:-- Graduated in the top 10% of a leadership training class (PLDC Commandant’s List)-- Was one of four soldiers promoted to Sergeant / E5 in the Calibration Specialist job classification after two years of no promotions to this rank due Army wide staffing decisions.
