For the last 10 years I've volunteered for a national, non-profit organization called Casting for Recovery (CFR). CFR has been around over 25 years, but the Utah program has been around for 10 years. In this role I lead, plan, and coordinate the annual retreat, annual fundraiser, and any other outreach events or activities that take place throughout the year. This year, I also volunteered at the national fundraiser in Hamilton, MT. For the annual retreats, I have the opportunity to coordinate all participant selections and arrivals, lodging, all activities, all volunteers, all funding and budgeting, all communications, etc.For the annual fundraiser, I have the opportunity to coordinate all donations, such as monetary or silent auction items, all funding and budgeting, all volunteers, all logistics, etc. Last year we raised nearly $20,000 for the Utah program. Our goal this year is $30,000.The Utah program is one of 60 annual retreats across the country. For the CFR program as a whole, more than 10,000 women have been served.At the retreats, we provide a healing experience for women with breast cancer, at no cost to the participants. The retreats offer opportunities for women to find inspiration, discover renewed energy for life, and experience healing connections with other women and nature. For women who have had surgery or radiation as part of their breast cancer treatment, the motion of fly casting can be good physical therapy for increasing mobility in the arm and upper body. The emotional benefits of connecting with nature is also part of the healing experience. Many of the women describe the experience as life-changing that has lasting affects in their lives.I chose to get involved with CFR, because it was a way I could utilize my own talents in fly fishing and leadership to make a true difference in people's lives.
