Being vulnerable is sometimes viewed as a weakness, but it is fundamental for human connection. Small talk is fine here and there, but if you really want to try and get through to at risk youth or be able to form deeply close connections with those around you, then telling your story (good and bad) is part of it. I have my own personal lived experiences that I have been able to use to help others. It is important for me to find meaning and joy in the work I do. Working with children can be so much fun, but it can also be challenging. Anybody that tells you different, is lying. But that is the beauty of working with people. They come from all levels of society and sometimes the only people they can count on are their teachers. I remember what it was like being a teenager and feeling misunderstood, but I also remember the teachers that never gave up on me. They were able to see past the walls I put up and connect with me and for that I am grateful. At my core I want to help others.
