Every male Austrian citizen after completing the age of 18 and generally when high school is finished is obliged to either serve the military or the social service in Austria as part of the conscription program for a period months, before enrolling for University or another kind of employment. I opted for social service in the health care sector specifically in the ambulance department of the organization called Grünes Kreuz which is a subsidiary of the Rotes Kreuz. The total time span of social service had a duration of 9 months and of that, I spent the former 5 months working in the ambulance for the Grünnes Kreuz und the latter 4 months I moved to an old age home serving the old, the sick, and the needy. The training consisted of one month of the theory being taught in classes and the following month being taught the hands-on practical knowledge that we would apply during the job. During the job, I got to witness the transcience of human life, the fate of suffering many patients faced, and got the opportunity to be of some relief in the midst of plight for fellow humans. This experience taught me life lessons that made me grow mature. These were some of the philosophical insights I had. Moreover, I got to learn a lot about Anatomy, Physiology, Sicknesses, emergency medical equipment, first aid, and a short intro into first responder tasks such as reanimation.
