Dr Augustine Asante is a health economist with over 10 years’ experience researching across the health system building blocks, particularly health financing and human resources for health (HRH). He has worked extensively in the Asia-Pacific region and sub-Saharan Africa evaluating complex health systems interventions, including assessing the impact of health financing and human resources for health reforms on equity of access to health services. He is currently leading the implementation of health financing and universal health coverage research projects in Indonesia and Cambodia. He has previously implemented similar projects in Ghana, Fiji and Timor-Leste. He holds a B.A (Hons) degree from University of Ghana, MSc. from Stockholm University and PhD from University of New South Wales (UNSW) Sydney, Australia. He has worked as a consultant health economist for the World Bank in Timor-Leste and also consulted on health system issues for a number of multilateral and bilateral agencies including WHO and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). He has also served as a healthcare financing project coordinator for the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). He started his career as a bureaucrat working at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning in Ghana. He teaches health economics and financing at UNSW School of Public Health and Community Medicine.
