As Chief of Staff of New Castle County government, my attention is focused on breaking down silos and bringing groups together to resolve seemingly intractable issues. My background in private sector project management informs my professional sense of urgency and focus on quantifiable outcomes. I get things done.I led County Executive Matt Meyer’s transition team, playing a major role in hiring core staff. I currently orchestrate activities across all functions. My primary charge is identifying critical issues and raising them for discussion – such as the county’s vacant housing problem. By facilitating collaboration among key Community Services, Land Use, Law, Finance and Public Safety teams, we experienced a 30% reduction in vacant homes in New Castle County, and collected over $1 million in delinquent taxes and code enforcement fees in 2018. That is an outcome of which we are very proud. Protecting the environment is another shared agenda running through the work our NCC government team does every day. Our combined efforts have resulted in…• legislation for renewable energy that has enabled the doubling of clean solar power generation in New Castle County• a plan for increased off-road, bike path access for recreational and workplace commuting purposes (which includes the gorgeous Jack Markell Trail)• an overall 7.5% decrease in crime since 2016• the first new county park in 15 yearsDriving people to productive conversation is pivotal to my role. I encourage the broadening and deepening of perspectives as a way to establish mutual objectives that lead to the achievement of sustainable goals. This thinking led to the development of NCC Cares, a program to make honest and transparent grants to groups and organizations that identify gaps in service to the public.The things that motivate me to get up in the morning are the personal relationships I treasure -especially with my son - and my desire to do good work for the people of New Castle County.
