Profile bio

About Aura Vasquez

I am a renewable energy advisor, environmental advocate, and social justice activist with extensive experience in policies that improve people's lives. As a native of Colombia, I bring a unique perspective as an immigrant, a woman of color, and a successful strategist to the intersection of many issues concerning frontline communities.I pursued a career in advocacy, policy, and social change; I advocated for state and federal immigrant rights with the PICO Network. I also helped spearhead the ban of single-use plastic bags in Los Angeles, and passed SB-350, the Clean Energy and Pollution Reduction Act, and helped establish the Los Angeles Feed & Tariff Initiative - the largest rooftop solar program in the country. As an organizer with the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign, I led the efforts to secure the announcement by former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for Los Angeles to be free of coal power by 2025.I was a former candidate for Los Angeles City Council, where I learned how to best reach people in our community, develop strong fundraising skills, and communicate better with the media and other stakeholders. In May 2017, I was appointed by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to the Board of Commissioners for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). At LADWP, the nation's largest municipal utility, I oversee a budget of over $450 billion dollars along with four other commissioners. My potential impact is broad as the utility employs over 9,000 people and serves 647,000 water customers and 1.4 million electricity ratepayers. Through this five-year appointment, I established policies that made our municipal utility agency more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable. These policies include the solar for renters program, the retirement of three coastal gas plants that were polluting low-income communities, and investments in increasing tree canopy, renewable energy, and energy efficiency in Los Angeles. In 2014, I founded Vasquez Solutions LLC, aiming to support businesses, organizations, and stakeholders in becoming more sustainable and significantly impacting the world. From working on governmental relations to business development, I aim to ensure your vision and goals are achieved while also giving resources to underserved communities and leaving better work for future generations.I am currently seeking full-time employment with an organization or company. Through my consulting company, I strive to partner with companies, organizations, and stakeholders that align with my values, goals, and experience. Let's connect!
