Ultrasonic And Signal Processing Specialist
Phd Research Student
Research field: • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system (embedded sensing) for aerospace structure • Guided waves • Signal processing and image reconstruction • Aerospace structures (metal and composite materials)• Multi-disciplinary research involving MATLAB programming, setting up experiments, collecting and processing a large amount of data, sample manufactureProject description: The aim of my research is to develop a Structural Health Monitoring system providing ultrasonic imaging of the material and its damage using guided wave (or Lamb wave) signals. To do so, I am using Piezo-electric disc sensors for both, generating and sensing guided waves throughout the structureThe ultimate goals of SHM are improving the maintenance of aircraft structures (especially CFRP composites and metals) and increase their safety while reducing the maintenance cost through a faster turnaround time for maintenance
Teaching Assitant
During my PhD I worked as a teaching assistant for undergraduate students from both, the School of Materials and the School of Mechanical Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE). In addition, I helped as a casual demonstrator and mentor for final year undergraduate, masters and first year PhD student working on composite materials and structural health monitoring. My responsibilities involved the following:• Organising laboratories and preparing tutorial questions• Correcting tutorials and providing feedback• Demonstrating science & engineering principles during laboratories and tutorials• Demonstrating how to use equipment and explaining Health &Safety regulationsThe courses in which I was involved were: • Materials manufacture and processing (tutorials and ceramic laboratories)• Introduction to aerospace (laboratories and preparation of specimen for a demonstration during lecture on aerospace structures)• Fluids mechanics for aerospace and mechanical engineering students (laboratories)• Electrical energy Supply & circuits (laboratories)
Postgraduate Research (Msc Thesis)
During my master thesis I worked on characterising micro-cracks at crimp region in a glass fibre woven fabric (reinforced with epoxy) composite using X-ray computed tomography (CT) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging techniques. I was in charge of all stages of a comprehensive research from experiment design, specimens manufacture and testing, to processing data and analysis results. The main challenge was the limited time of the project considering that I had to adapt and learn several new techniques quickly. Also, I had to be decisive and get it right the first time as there was not much time for trials and errors. My main tasks can be described as follow: • Manufacturing composite specimens using resin infusion process and Hot Press curing • Preparing specimen according to standards for tensile test and the imaging systems (X-ray, SEM), and generating cracks in specimens using tensile loading• Post processing the X-ray CT data using Avizo software
Industrial Placement
I assisted the research team in Glyndwr University and at the Advance Composite training and Development Centre (of Airbus and Glyndwr University), which involved the following: • Conducting investigation on residual stresses in composite materials (Carbon Fibres Reinforced Plastic) cured by autoclave, and on matrix polymerisation under microwave cure• Elaborating and presenting possible solutions to implement that included a proposition to use carbon fibre as a stress & strain sensor • Helping with preparing and hosting the Second international Conference on Advanced composite materials and Technologies for Aerospace Applications (ACMTAA-2012), conference link: https://www.glyndwr.ac.uk/acmtaa/2012.htmlI also gained experience with common laboratory practices, equipment such as DMA (Dynamic Mechanical Analysis) and tensile testing.
