Research Field: ROBOTICS FOR IN ORBIT SATELLITES SERVICINGScolarship objective:Space robotics is a challenging subject, whenever exploited to succeed in in-orbit operations between two proximal vehicles that have to dock: due to the six degrees of freedom each of the interacting vehicles has, the control of their relative dynamics is a tough task, accomplished partially by the on board control, partially by the robotic subsystem devoted to create the link between the two. While in space refueling is a promising technique to last the commercial spacecraft lifetime, still autonomous docking between unmanned space vehicles never occurred. The goal of the present research is to assess the feasibility, identify the criticalities andprototyping the solution for robotic refueling in orbit between two unmanned space vehicles. Such a goal is a brick of the larger research program STRONG, part of the SAPERE Cluster program, supported by the MIUR for the Space Research Area. The principal goal of STRONG is to assess, prototype and test systems for in orbit servicing.Subjects:Orbital mechanics theory and codes for proximity maneuvering, multi-body modelling and codes for the robotic end effector dynamic and control synthesis, structural codes for the robotic refueling arm and end effector design, tests run in the labs of the SAPERE Cluster Program team partners.

Recently, the concept of orbital servicing has been studied in order to tackle some of the problems listed above. However, a number of obstacles have prevented the implementation of orbital servicing. The most important among these is the configuration of current satellites, whose design does not take into account maintenance or refueling interfaces. Learning from the errors of the past, the next generation of spacecraft could be designed with maintainability and servicing in mind. Considering the international context of space activities, a crucial first step in achieving this goal is to formulate a set of mutually agreed upon guidelines and engineering standards to direct the inclusion of maintainability as a design parameter for the next generation of spacecraft.
