1 - Self-developed research project aiming at extrapolating porosity geometry in 3D from 2D SEM image analysis which led to 3 publications. The novel technique adapted mathematical morphology in the study of chalk microporosity. The potential advantages are multifold. First, standard parameters such as pore and throat diameters distributions can be easily quantified. Second, less known parameters such as pore throat angularity and pore wall roughness can also be estimated. Finally, thanks to the availability of SEMs and personal computers, the method is particularly cheap and fast in comparison to technologies such as MICP, NMR or CT. It is envisioned that, owing to the meaningfulness of its results and its inherent low cost, the technique could be applied on a wide scale in reservoir studies and help improve flow modelling at the pore scale. The algorithm was written in the R language and, depending on CPU properties, has a runtime of 2-3 mins per SEM image (~ 5h for 100 images). 2 - Subsequent project focusing on chalk reservoir characterisation based on outcrop studies. Techniques included digital outcrop modelling, porosity-permeability distribution analysis and stratigraphy, shallow seismic and behind-the-outcrop cores and well logs.
