As a participant choice specialist at Harbor Regional Center, I support and advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities, helping them access person-centered services and resources that increase individual choice and control to live as independently as possible and fulfill their potential. I coordinate and conduct community outreach to the individuals served to ensure equity and inclusion. I collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of professionals, service providers, and family members to ensure the quality and effectiveness of the programs and interventions we offer. I also educate and empower our participants to find their voice and their intrinsic power, using my authentic, honest, and relatable communication skills. My passion for helping those who feel disenfranchised stems from my own experience of coming from another country and struggling to learn a new language and way of life. I have over 20 years of experience in various roles that involve working with individuals who need additional support, guidance, and advocacy, such as social worker, union organizers and behavior therapist. I hold a master's degree in education counseling and a bachelor's degree in psychology from California State University-Dominguez Hills, where I learned the theoretical and practical aspects of counseling and guidance. I also have skills in writing and working with non-profit organizations, which enable me to communicate effectively and efficiently with different stakeholders and audiences. My goal is to effect real change and make a positive difference in the lives of the people I serve.
