I learned the ropes of publishing at Penguin Business, under Martina O'Sullivan, beginning as an Editorial Assistant before being promoted in September 2022. I was privileged enough to work with a host of bestselling business authors, including Seth Godin, John Doerr and Anne Boden, and to commission authors including Chris Smalls and Aaron Dignan onto the list.

With the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Nairobi, Kenya. My work concerned affairs in Somalia and I travelled to Mogadishu regularly. Initially, my speciality was in Information Management, and I worked mainly as a graphic designer - the bulk of my work being done on design software such as Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. I later expanded into Public Information and eventually all Communications. During my final 18 months, I regularly served as acting Head of Communications in the absence of my manager, and I had multiple employees report to me. The primary characteristics needed for this job were adaptability (e.g. to political/social changes in Somalia), patience and diplomacy/teamwork.

This role involved the production of content for the Ireland Lacrosse YouTube channel, the reporting on league/international matches for the company's website, the securing of sponsorship for the organisation through social media promotion/advertising, and generally fulfilling the role of spokesperson for Ireland Lacrosse, which means engaging with Irish radio stations, newspapers and other media outlets. This role also provided me with the opportunity to serve as lead color commentator for the 2017 European Box (Indoor) Lacrosse Championships in Turku, Finland, alongside well-established commentator Stephen Stamp. As a result of my work in this role, I inadvertently became a photographer for the organisation too, becoming proficient in all kinds of editing software for both pictures and videos.

I worked as a reporter for the University Observer; this involved editing copy, arranging interviews and chasing stories for the bi-monthly publication. While I initially focused my efforts on Arts and Culture (food, music, film etc.), during my final year my reporting took a fiercely political tone, and I wrote numerous articles analyzing the 2016 Presidential Election in the U.S.A., the impact which Brexit would have on the European market and the then-upcoming round of European elections (France, the Netherlands and Germany). As a result of my efforts in my final year, I was nominated for Journalist of the Year at the 2017 Student Media Awards, an honor bestowed upon just eight student journalists in the country; my articles analyzing the impact which Trump's presidency would have on global politics were those which were submitted for consideration.

This role involved the running of a chapter of St. Vincent de Paul (SVP), one of the major charities working to combat homelessness in Ireland. The chapter contained 1,620 members and, as Secretary, my job was to ensure transparent communication between those members and the Operating Committee. As part of the role, I noted and filed the minutes of many meetings, arranged Vulnerable Adult Training and Suicide Intervention Training for our volunteers and worked in close collaboration with the head SVP office who sponsored our activities. I also arranged for our volunteers to be vetted with the police, maintained our social media presence and accommodated guest speakers who were invited to receive our Fellowship at the University. Mostly, however, this job involved volunteering - working on the streets of Dublin, providing food, counselling and emergency information for the homeless - as well as coordinating so that our volunteers could do the same, four nights a week.

I worked as a call centre operative for the UCD Foundation, ringing alumni and fundraising university scholarships for those who cannot afford tuition. I learned to meet quotas, work under pressure and excel in a work environment. During my five weeks at the Foundation, I was Caller of the Week twice.

This role is an example of previous volunteer experience. I traveled to Gros Morne, Haiti with UCD Volunteers Overseas (UCDVO) for five weeks during the summer of 2014. While in Haiti, we ran three different projects. The first was a computer literacy program for adult teachers living the community. Working in conjunction with Camara Education (charity), we brought computers to the village and ran a course, teaching basic computer skills such as Microsoft Office and the use of the Internet. The second project we ran was a summer camp for the local children, where we would use art, music and sport to engage and teach them. I looked after 4-8 year old boys and used the time to focus on English and Mathematics, as many of them worked during the year and had missed a lot of school. The final project was the construction of a new classroom at a local school; we worked with Haitians and were thankfully successful.

I presented and produced the Breakfast Show over the course of two summers. I also learned audio production, recorded advertisements and reorganized the station’s music database.

Starting as an intern, I initially focused on the production of content for the monthly publication; within five weeks, I had written the cover story for my second issue with the team, and I had moved into a copy editor role. All intern production passed through me, and at the end of the scheme I was asked to return as an editor for the following summer's program.
